Among New Zealand's myriad of wonders are its many lakes and rivers - filled with crystal-clear waters and fat fighting fish, ringed by soaring trees and undulating green fields. They are natural settings for some of the country's finest resting spots: lodges, small intimate hotels set in lovely landscapes and dedicated to mirroring the great beauty and tranquillity of nature.
New Zealand has developed a network of exceptional lodges, which have gained an international reputation and following. Five are among our favorites. Huka Lodge was begun on the banks of the Waikato River over half a century ago; today it showcases the very best of New Zealand's food and wine and offers guests an environment with blazing fireplaces, tennis courts and trout-filled streams. Treetops Lodge sits at the heart of the world's trout fishing capital, Rotorua.
This elegant, luxurious lodge is nestled in a secluded 2,599-acre valley and boasts its own wilderness park and hunting and game reserve where guests can hike, bike, ride horses, fish bird watch and enjoy the unbroken tranquility.
The Lodge at Paratiho is a grand manor replete with swimming pool, tennis courts and a gym and it features a stunning art collection. The Paratiho Lodge is set on a 2,000 acre working farm on the outskirts of New Zealand's most artistic and art-friendly city, Nelson. Eichardt's Private Hotel and Matakauri Lodge are both set in the stunning alpine town of Queenstown. Eichardt's is a small jewel nestled on the lake in the heart of Queenstown. A national icon, the hotel was borne of the gold rush in the 1860's and is one of the best loved buildings in New Zealand. Completely restored and remodeled in 2000, today it houses five luxurious and spacious suites. Matakauri Lodge is also on the lake and offers magnificent views of the mountains. An exquisite architectural creation, the lodge takes full advantage of its remarkable locale; its surrounding nine acres are landscaped with rolling lawns, a meandering stream, native plants and a pine forest. Prices vary according to the property and normally include breakfast and dinner.
