Southern Comforts The South Island: Queenstown and Christchurch (6 days) ![]() The South Island is home to as many marvels as the north, including spectacular mountain ranges, racing rivers, hundreds of sheep farms, and Milford Sound, which Rudyard Kipling called "the eighth wonder of the world." You'll start your tour of the island in Queenstown, a town borne of a gold rush in the 1860s, where you'll stay at the Mercure Grand Hotel St. Moritz, a four-star hotel reminiscent of an alpine chateau. The award-winning St. Moritz is set in the heart of town and overlooks Queenstown Bay and Lake Wakatipu.
On your second day in Queenstown, you'll tour through the area's gorgeous scenery, stopping at spectacular lookouts before you arrive at the world-famous Milford Sound, which houses one of the planet's most spectacular fjords. You'll take a launch through the fjord, cruising past sheer rock walls, lakes as smooth as glass, and roaring waterfalls cocooned by mist. At the end of the day, you'll return to Queenstown by taking a spectacular scenic flight over the Southern Alps.
On your fourth day you'll fly from Queenstown to Christchurch (airfare not included). There you'll check into The George Hotel, a stylish retreat, or the sophisticated Heritage Christchurch. Stroll through Cathedral Square and past the River Avon in this, the most anglicized of New Zealand's cities.
On your tour of the city, you'll visit the suburb of Sumner, the little port of Lyttelton and Evans Pass. On your last day you'll be transferred from the hotel to the airport. The tour price includes hotel accommodations, land transfers,
taxes and
sightseeing as noted.
