A Nation Reborn
A Tale of Two Cities
Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi (7 days)

Modern
Vietnam is becoming one of Asia’s most popular destinations. Visitors come
for the beauty of the land, the energy of the cities, the graciousness of
the people, the splendour of the art, the zest of the food and the caliber
of the shopping. Vietnam has a rich past and a dynamic present and the two
exist side by side throughout the country. Ho Chi Minh city is a major
metropolis that
celebrates contemporary life against a backdrop of colonial
architecture and sets a dynamic pace for the whole country. Hanoi, the
capital of Vietnam, is an elegant city with a long and diverse history and
a timeless Old Quarter that was once a thriving commercial center-today you
can still wander its ancient streets and find bolts of fine silk and silver
and jade jewelry. Hue, Vietnam’s capital from 1802 to 1945 under a
succession of thirteen emperors of the Nguyen dynasty was a major center;
UNESCO has labelled the city “a beautiful architectural poem”. Danang, once
a key trading post, is a living architectural museum showcasing Portuguese,
Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, British and French influences. And Halong Bay is a
natural wonderland, a World Heritage Site where thousands of limestone
islets sit in a bay of breathtaking beauty. Vietnam truly offers visitors an
opportunity to see a land of rare beauty and rich culture.
You’ll
start your tour in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), where you’ll stay at
the luxurious high-rise Caravelle or the Sheraton Saigon. Ho Chi Minh is a
bustling cosmopolitan Asian city and the French influence is still apparent
here, too, from the broad tree-lined boulevards to the imposing villas and
colonial architecture.
On your second day, you’ll see the city’s major sights, including the
elegant History Museum, where you’ll be treated to an enchanting performance
of traditional Water Puppetry. You’ll see Notre Dame Cathedral and City
Hall, explore the old Presidential Palace with its remarkable network of
underground bunkers, and venture through the bustling indoor Benh Thanh
market and Cholon (China Town). The next day you’ll visit the Great Temple
of the Cao Dai religion, a unique fusion of Western and Eastern philosophies
and religions. Then you’ll tour the Cu Chi Tunnels, an ingenious underground
network built during the war. The tunnels, more than 200 kilometres long
contained storage rooms, kitchens, hospitals, sleeping quarters and even
schools.
On your fourth day, you’ll fly to Hanoi, the quiet capital of Vietnam, a
graceful city of lakes, boulevards, leafy public parks, and countless
street-side cafes. You’ll stay at the historic Sofitel Metropole or the
Hilton Hanoi.
On day five, you’ll tour this charming capital city, visiting Ho Chi Minh’s
former residence; the One Pillar Pagoda; the Temple of Literature, Hanoi’s
most important religious complex
and Vietnam’s first university; Hoan Kiem
Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. The next day you’ll take a full day excursion to
Halong Bay, Vietnam’s most precious natural wonder, a vast bay with more
than 2,000 limestone islets. You’ll cruise through the spectacular bay on a
private junk. On your last day, you’ll transfer to the airport for your
flight home.
