Cambodia Over a thousand years ago, one of the world's greatest cities rose from Cambodia's jungles. It was a colossal city, made up of over 300 exquisite monuments, all built to celebrate and honor the kings of the Khmer empire. Today that city, Angkor, is a World Heritage Site, the unofficial Eighth Wonder of the World, and a beacon to adventurous travelers from around the globe. It is also the cultural and spiritual center of Cambodia, a source of stability and pride to a nation emerging from decades of turbulence.
But Cambodia is more than just Angkor. Its capital, Phnom Penh, is an intriguing, hospitable city once known as the "Paris of the East" for its wide tree-lined boulevards and elegant villas. And, of course, there are the Cambodians themselves, friendly, gracious, and happy to welcome the visitors who are returning to explore their country.
In Phnom Penh you'll stay at the Hotel Le Royal, a landmark that has played host to everyone from Jackie Kennedy to Charles de Gaulle since it opened in 1931; or at the luxurious, modern Sofitel Cambodiana. You'll visit the home of Cambodia's current King, the Royal Palace, and the National Museum, an architectural marvel that houses one of the world's finest collections of Khmer art. On your second day, visit the city's markets or opt for a tour of Toul Sleng, a notorious prison during Pot Pol's regime.
On your third day you'll fly to Siem Reap, your base from which to tour the temples of Angkor. Here you'll stay at the Grand Hotel D'Angkor, a palatial, historic hotel; or at the elegant Sofitel Royal Angkor. In Seam Reap, you'll tour Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the Bayon and Banteay Srei temples and also visit Tonle Sap Great Lake for a look at the life of Cambodian fishermen and farmers. On your sixth day you'll be transferred to the airport. The tour price includes domestic flights, accommodations, breakfasts and dinners, transfers and sightseeing as noted.
