Myanmar Travels (6 days)

Myanmar, wrote Rudyard Kipling over a century ago, is "quite unlike any land you will ever know." Today it remains one of the most foreign, fascinating countries on earth, home to fabled cities like Mandalay, massive jewel encrusted pagodas, and a landscape varied enough to include mountains, desert and jungle. A succession of military governments has kept the country isolated for decades and Myanmar is only now beginning to open up to travelers. But those that do venture into the country will find fantastic sites and charming, generous people. The capital, Yangon, is quiet and lush and home to the stunning Shwe Dagon Pagoda and its stupa crowned by a 76-carat diamond. In the centuries-old city of Bagan sits one of the world's true marvels: a complex of some 5,000 magnificent temples. And in Mandalay, once the capital, you'll find the thriving cultural center of Myanmar.

In Yangon you'll stay at The Strand, a Victorian mansion that is now a national landmark, or at the Governor's Residence, a teak villa set in a lotus garden. On your first day, you'll tour the city and visit one of Buddhism's most revered sites, the Shwe Dagon Pagoda. On your second day, you'll fly to Bagan, one of Asia's most remarkable destinations. There you'll tour the majestic Shwe Zigon Pagoda, as well as cave temples and other pagodas. You may also opt for a tour of Mount Popa, an extinct volcano that is now home to birds and butterflies. In Bagan you'll stay at the Thiripyitsaya or the Bagan Hotel, both set on the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River. On your fourth day you'll fly to Mandalay, where you'll stay at the deluxe Sedona or at the Mandalay Hill Resort. There you'll take a river cruise to the awesome ruins of the Mingun temple and visit a monastery, two exceptional pagodas and Mandalay Hill. On your fifth day, you'll fly back to Yangon for a final night in the capital and a tour of the city's markets. On your sixth day you'll be transferred to the airport.

The tour price includes domestic flights, accommodations, breakfasts and dinners, transfers, and sightseeing as noted.
